What will you be doing?
English in all its forms — speaking, listening, reading and writing — is becoming increasingly important in Dutch journalism, especially when it comes to research. On the basis of your experience in journalism you will teach students to find, use, and analyse reliable English sources that they will consult for projects such as in-depth research assignments and interviews. You will also guide and support students who wish to work abroad to develop their English writing skills. Furthermore, you will provide feedback on their journalistic productions like articles, fact checks, videos, and audio projects.
Students will not only learn about journalism and English, but they will also develop a broader understanding of the world around them. You will stimulate their interest in foreign affairs, in reporting on global issues within the Netherlands, and also in the possibility of becoming a foreign correspondent. Together with colleagues you will coordinate educational projects abroad. Occasionally you will also make holistic assessments of students’ journalistic competences.
What do we ask from you?
You have a clear vision with regard to the internationalization of journalism and education, as well as how to make English compelling for Dutch journalism students.
Your first priority is student development. You know how to motivate students and how best to guide and instruct them. At the same time, you are committed to personal development and continuous professional improvement as an instructor. Working under time pressure is no problem for you, and you are a flexible and cooperative team member.
We also ask that you:
- Have a Master’s and a Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO), or willingness to obtain the latter;
- Have an excellent command of English (you are preferably a native speaker);
- Have evident experience as a journalist;
- Preferably have knowledge of and experience in teaching English.
